Evidence-based practice is foundational to undergraduate and graduate nursing education and is a way for the nursing discipline to minimize the theory to practice gap. This article discusses the concept of evidence-based practice from a historical perspective as it relates to nursing in the educational and practice domains. The concept evidence-based practice is defined, and the similarities and differences to evidence-based medicine are discussed. It is crucial that registered nurses be proactive in their quest for research knowledge, so the gap between theory and practice continues to close. Utilizing nursing best practice guidelines, reviewing and implementing applicable research evidence, and taking advantage of technological advances are all ways in which nursing can move forward as a well-informed discipline. The COG Nursing Discipline Committee has embedded the tenets of evidence-based practice (EBP) into clinical trials nursing in order to standardize the nursing care delivered to children enrolled on these trials. The COG nursing EBP initiative is aimed at developing evidence-based clinical resources and tools to provide guidance to clinicians regarding topics relevant to the provision of cancer treatment for patients enrolled on COG clinical trials from diagnosis through survivorship. A rigorous, evidence-based process designed to guide development of the evidence-based clinical tools and resources within the COG nursing discipline was developed and was implemented with the first nurse expert team beginning in 2012. Method: The standardized process included (a) selecting EBP projects and nursing expert teams (NETs), (b) providing leadership, mentoring, and championship for NETs; (c) approving clinical content developed through the NETs; and (d) providing guidance and oversight over planned dissemination of the COG EBP projects. Results: The COG Nursing EBP Subcommittee has developed 15 publications to date that include 90 authors. Eleven of these authors contributed to multiple publications. Discussion: On this 10th anniversary of the development of the EBP within the COG nursing discipline, we recognize its contributions to the professional growth of many of the discipline's members and to advances in nursing care for children enrolled in pediatric cancer clinical trials. We discuss how the recent cohort of nurse residents are leading efforts to improve geriatric depression screening on a NICHE unit through designing an evidence-based practice improvement project. This initiative reinforces and extends our work in geriatric nursing excellence. There are reasons to be concerned about an uncritical adherence to the use of significance testing, which has been located in the natural science paradigm. p-values have served in hypothesis and statistical testing, such as in randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses to support what has been portrayed as the highest levels of evidence in the framework of evidence-based practice. Nursing has been minimally involved in the rich debate about the controversies of treating significance testing as evidentiary in the health and social sciences. In this paper, we join the dialogue by examining how and why this statistical mechanism has become entrenched as the gold standard for determining what constitutes legitimate scientific knowledge in the postpositivistic paradigm. We argue that nursing needs to critically reflect on the limitations associated with this tool of the evidence-based movement, given the complexities and contextual factors that are inherent to nursing epistemology. This hybrid focus of the discipline reflects the varied roles and expertise within pediatric oncology clinical trials nursing that encompass clinical care, leadership, and research. Nurses are broadly represented across COG disease, domain, and administrative committees, and are assigned to all clinically focused protocols. Equally important is the provision of clinical trials-specific education and training for nurses caring for patients on COG trials. Nurses involved in the discipline's evidence-based practice initiative have published a wide array of systematic reviews on topics of clinical importance to the discipline. Nurses also develop and lead research studies within COG, including stand-alone studies and aims embedded in disease/ treatment trials. Additionally, the nursing discipline is charged with responsibility for developing patient/family educational resources within COG. Looking to the future, the nursing discipline will continue to support COG clinical trials through a multifaceted approach, with a particular focus on patient-reported outcomes and health equity/disparities, and development of interventions to better understand and address illness-related distress in children with cancer. Background: The Magnet (R) Recognition Program is a model for nursing excellence that promotes nursing research and evidence-based practice. Studies show that nurses need assistance in overcoming common barriers to scholarly inquiry, including knowledge and skills, confidence, scarce time, and financial support. The fellowship program was developed to reinforce institutional goals related to nursing scholarship and Magnet (R) designation. Methods: A pre-test post-test repeated measures study assessed fellowship program outcomes immediately before, after, and at one year post program completion. Data collected included descriptive data related to the fellowship program participants and projects. The 49-item Developing Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire survey evaluated evidenced-based practice knowledge and skills. Results: Over a 5-year period, 22 (+2 pilot) participants graduated from the fellowship program with a total of 9 completed projects (+1 pilot) and 1 ongoing study. The fellowship program helped to overcome some common obstacles related to skill and confidence in using research evidence and completing scholarly projects. Many improvements were sustained over time. The greatest barrier to nursing inquiry, time, needs continued attention, as this was reported as an enduring limitation to nursing scholarship. Conclusion: The fellowship program reinforced and enhanced the organizational commitment to building and sustaining a passion for clinical inquiry through research and evidence-based practice, supporting the requirements of a Magnet (R)-designated hospital. Continued support is needed to garner nursing success. To explore academic and clinical nurses' perceptions and experiences on academic-practice partnership in evidence-based practice. Background. Academic-practice partnership could promote evidence-based practice which is crucial for high-quality care. Academic and clinical nurses are the foundation of the partnerships; however, there is little knowledge of their perceptions and experiences on academic-practice partnership in evidence-based practice. Methods. This is an interpretive description study. Twenty-two eligible participants were interviewed through face-to-face or online videoconferencing meetings. Guiding questions for the interviews focused on the perceptions and experiences of academic-practice partnership in the context of evidence-based practice. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and checked verbatim. We used constant comparative analysis to analyze the qualitative data. Results. Four themes with fifteen subthemes were generated: necessities, modes, challenges, and benefits of the academic-practice partnership in evidence-based practice. Participants believed that academic-practice partnership was a necessary strategy to promote evidence-based practice and could be built through different modes. Nevertheless, most academic-practice partnerships were superficial because of specific types of challenges. However, a good academic-practice partnership could create a win-win situation for both nursing academia and clinical practice. Conclusion. Academic-practice partnership is a win-win strategy for both the academic side and clinical side to promote evidence-based practice. Different modes of academic-practice partnership provide academic and clinical nurses with more opportunities to promote evidence-based practice with a higher likelihood of successful implementation. However, related challenges require multilevel measures to provide better environments to initiate, build, and maintain intensive collaborations between academic and clinical nurses. Implications for Nursing Management. Academic and clinical organizations, leaders, and individuals should take multilevel measures to initiate, build, and maintain a close academic-practice partnership to promote evidence-based practice, which is crucial for high-quality nursing care, patient safety, and nursing discipline development. Despite the well-documented benefits, implementation of EBP is inconsistent and remains elusive in the US and throughout the world and many patients still fail to receive evidence-based care. The literature revealed a huge gap between nursing science and practice but provided evidence that nurse managers (NMs) had a pivotal leadership role in implementing EBP.AimTo gain a deeper understanding of Magnet-recognized hospital nurse managers' (MRHNMs) leadership roles, the influencing factors, and their experience in implementing EBP to enhance EBP initiatives and sustain Magnet recognition.MethodThis mixed-method study guided by Goodall's (Australasian Psychiatry, 2016. 24, 231) theory of expert leadership used a sequential explanatory method with a quantitative-driven design based on a national correlational survey augmented by a qualitative descriptive component using semi-structured interviews.ResultsThe findings of the study demonstrated that MRHNMs had a 54.6% effective leadership role in implementing EBP and produced numerous themes indicating that MRHNMs did implement EBP with struggle. MRHNMs in this study viewed EBP as a healthcare priority and leadership of NMs is necessary to promote EBP. However, lack of knowledge, difficulties with the EBP process, time constraints, and staffing issues negatively impacted EBP. Postgraduate degree, formal EBP education, critical care units as workplace, collaboration with doctorally prepared nurses, and Magnet culture enhanced EBP among MRHNMs.Linking Evidence to ActionEBP is essential for Magnet recognition and is a hallmark of nursing excellence, however, is a complex and challenging process. The leadership of NMs is necessary to shape evidence-based care, and NMs require EBP preparation during leadership training, necessary resources, and time to complete the EBP process. Since then, the importance of healthcare staff work life has also been highlighted, and together these four elements form the Quadruple Aim framework. Synergistic to this Aim, the Magnet((R)) program promotes and recognizes organizational nursing excellence. Objective To examine the EPC's work to inform nursing policy and practice in support of the goals of the Quadruple Aim framework and Magnet((R)) designation. Methods Methods used included the following: (1) descriptive analysis of the hospital EPC's database of rapid reviews; and (2) administration of a 40-item electronic questionnaire to nurses who requested an EPC review during fiscal years (FY) 2015 and 2016. Results Of 308 rapid reviews completed in the EPC's first 10 years, 59 (19%) addressed nursing topics. The proportion of reviews relevant to nursing increased from 5% (2/39) in the center's first 2 years to 44% (25/60) in FY 2015-2016. The majority of nursing reviews (39/59) examined processes of care. Of 23 nurses eligible to participate in the survey, 21 responded (91%). Nurses with administrative or managerial responsibilities requested 70% of reviews; clinical nurse specialists and bedside nurses requested 17% and 9%, respectively. Reviews were used to support clinical program development (48%), provide clinical guidance (33%), update nursing policies or procedures (24%) and develop training and curricula (24%). Nurses were satisfied with the hospital EPC reviews (mean; 4.7/5), and 95% indicated they were likely to request a future review. Linking Evidence to Action A dedicated hospital EPC in partnership with nursing offers a unique mechanism for promoting a culture of evidence-based practice. Nurses at all organizational levels use the services of a hospital EPC to inform nursing policy and practice and are highly satisfied with the process, supporting the Quadruple Aim and Magnet((R)) designation. The approach has been widely embraced; however, an evidence-to-practice gap still exists. Aim To assess barriers to EBP among nurses in low- and middle-income countries. Methods This review conforms to the PRISMA statement. Databases PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, and Web of Science/Knowledge were searched using a combination of keywords that included "barriers," "evidence-based practice," and "nurses." The references of the selected articles were also hand-searched to obtain additional relevant articles. Studies published in peer-reviewed journals in English between 2000 and 2018 were included in the review. Results Sixteen articles were included in the analysis, with a total number of 8,409 participants. Both qualitative and quantitative studies were included in the review. Three main themes emerged from eight categories found. The three main themes were institutional-related barriers, interdisciplinary barriers, and nurse-related barriers. The theme of institutional-related barriers emerged from four categories, which included scant resources, limited access to information, inadequate staffing, and lack of institutional support. The theme of interdisciplinary barriers emerged from subcategories that included lack of communication between academic and clinical practice environments, inconsistency between education and practice in the nursing discipline, lack of teamwork, and the public's negative image about the nursing profession. Finally, the theme of nurse-related barriers emerged from categories including perceived limitations in the scope of nurses' practice, time, knowledge of EBP, and individual-related barriers. Linking Evidence to Action These findings may guide the design of future interventions aimed at fostering EBP. Implementing EBP in practice should be systematic and requires institutional will and interdisciplinary and individual commitment. Mainly due to its close link to the nursing discipline's raison d'& ecirc;tre, "caring," translational science is recently getting more attention from nursing scientists across the globe. This paper is to discuss the current status of translational science in nursing across four countries (the USA, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan). The data used in this discussion paper included: (a) written notes on issues related translational research/science in individual countries; (b) written memos on exemplars/cases from their own experiences; and (c) summaries of literature reviews. The data analysis was conducted using a simple content analysis. Within our multi-Magnet-designated academic medical center, part of a larger academic health system, a shared governance structure had been in place for many years. However, to respond to the evolving demands of the academic medical center, the increasing complexity of health care delivery, and the need for stronger alignment between frontline practice and organizational strategy, the leadership and governance model was redesigned to fully integrate professional shared governance into the model with direct care nurses. Purpose: The purpose of this article is to describe how an ANCC Magnet-designated academic medical center systematically developed, implemented, and evaluated a transition from traditional shared governance to a robust professional shared governance framework by intentionally engaging nurses at all levels of the organization. This work aimed to strengthen nurses' voice in decision-making; enhance professional accountability; and hardwire structures that align nursing practice, quality, and innovation with organizational priorities. Methods: A pre-post survey design was used to examine nurse engagement over a two-year period spanning the implementation of the professional shared governance model. Validated engagement measures were administered to nurses across the academic medical center before the redesign (2024 presurvey) and after its full implementation (2025 postsurvey). Comparative analyses were conducted to assess changes in overall engagement and in specific domains associated with professional practice, informatics, recruitment and retention, recognition, and evidence-based practice/research. Results: A total of 248 and 286 nurses responded to the preimplementation and postimplementation surveys, respectively, and their responses were compared. Overall nurse engagement scores increased between the 2024 presurvey and the 2025 postsurvey, indicating stronger perceptions of involvement, influence, and professional support following implementation of the professional shared governance model. The largest gains were observed in domains related to maximizing the capabilities of clinical and information technology to support patients and families; recruitment, retention, and recognition activities; and engagement in evidence-based practice and research opportunities. Clinical nurses demonstrated increased engagement across all measured categories, mirroring the overall pattern of improvement and showing the most substantial gains in the same high-impact domains. Conclusion: Transitioning from shared governance to professional shared governance within an academic medical center is a complex, iterative, and developmental process that advances over time. Effective professional shared governance structures require intentional design, sustained leadership commitment, and active nurse participation at every level of the organization. To ensure these structures remain meaningful and high performing, they must be continuously evaluated, refined, and adapted to reflect contemporary practice, emerging priorities, and the evolving needs of nurses, patients, and the health system. By leveraging data-driven insights, incorporating innovative strategies, and maintaining a culture of shared accountability and collaboration, professional shared governance can remain agile, forward-thinking, and a powerful driver of nursing excellence and organizational outcomes. BACKGROUND: Nurse-generated research is the cornerstone of evidence-based practice and continues to be a marker of nursing excellence. However, the dearth of PhD-prepared nurses creates a challenge for creating an environment to promote clinical nursing research. We evaluated the LINK project, an academic-clinical partnership, to assess its impact and feasibility, for fostering nurse-led clinical research. METHODS: The LINK project created a formal command and control structure bringing together existing academic resources, including a PhD-prepared nurse researcher, a biostatistician, and a development of a formal research consultation request process. Measures tracked over a 12-month period included average response time, request volume, client satisfaction, institutional review board (IRB)-submitted protocols, and work products. RESULTS: All measures exceeded expectations with an average 1-day request response time, 35 requests, 98% client satisfaction, a 367% increase in nurse-led IRB approved protocols from the previous 12-month period, and 2 publications in peer-reviewed journals. CONCLUSIONS: The process and outcome measures indicate that the LINK project is feasible, sustainable, and reproducible. We were able to meet and, in many cases, exceed measurement goals. In addition, implementation science literature indicates that the most valid measure of a successful project rollout is user satisfaction and usefulness. Complications such as CRBSI and inaccurate readings are common. There is a lack of standardised nursing guidelines, and weak awareness of evidence-based protocols among nurses affects care quality. Aim To summarise the evidence for monitoring and management of invasive arterial blood pressure in critically ill patients and optimise critical care outcomes. Study Design This study was conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology. The PIPOST model guided the formulation of the review question, and a systematic bilingual search was performed across Chinese and international databases following the 6S evidence hierarchy. Eligible studies were screened, critically appraised using appropriate tools, and the extracted evidence was thematically categorised and graded to support standardised nursing practices in invasive arterial blood pressure monitoring. Results A total of 36 pieces of evidence were synthesised and categorised into six sections: catheterisation, catheter maintenance, blood pressure monitoring accuracy, complication management, patient safety and comfort and education and training. Conclusions These 36 synthesised recommendations form a comprehensive and actionable framework for the standardised management of invasive arterial blood pressure monitoring in critical care. Notably, the synthesis emphasises the integration of technical precision with nursing practice, addressing both clinical safety and operational feasibility. Their implementation holds the potential to reduce complications, enhance monitoring accuracy and promote evidence-based nursing excellence. Relevance to Clinical Practice Implementing these evidence-based guidelines can streamline monitoring, reduce complications and improve data reliability for better patient care. Background In the rapidly changing landscape of health care, nurses are challenged with the responsibility to engage in evidence-based practice, quality improvement and research projects. Clinical and academic partnerships play a vital role in fostering collaboration, mentorship and resources. Design Discursive paper. Method Searching international literature published between 2010-2020 in PubMed, CINAHL and Google Scholar, we explored the benefits, barriers and facilitators of clinical academic partnerships from the available evidence and professional perspectives from both sides of a clinical/academic collaboration. Discussion Evidence-based literature supports the establishment of partnerships schools of nursing and clinical institutions to improve patient outcomes and experiences and provide additional resources for improved research and practice capacity between both entities. Barriers to establishing clinical academic partnerships included lack of time, lack of formal collaborations and knowledge deficits. Facilitators included visible leadership endorsement, mentoring and modelling a culture of inquiry. Conclusions The establishment of formalised clinical academic partnerships can be used to develop continuing education programmes, promote engagement in nursing inquiry, fill in knowledge gaps in practice and improve available resources and patient outcomes. There is a great need for capacity building in hospitals, superficially, those with a mission to address the research-practice gap, promote nursing excellence and improve patient outcomes. Relevance to clinical practice Nurse leaders play an instrumental role in establishing sustainable clinical academic partnerships that create shared resources, resulting in mutual benefit, and influences a much-needed shift in organisational culture and infrastructure. However, research capacity in nursing is still commonly used as a buzzword, without a consistent and clear definition. The purpose of this study is to clarify the concept of research capacity in nursing by identifying its conceptual components in the relevant nursing literature using the Pragmatic Utility method. Design A Pragmatic Utility concept analysis based on a scoping review. Data sources Academic literature retrieved from PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses (PQDT). Eligibility criteria Qualitative studies, quantitative studies, mixed method studies or literature reviews focusing on research capacity in nursing published in English between 2009 and 2019. Results Competence, motivation, infrastructure and collaboration for nursing research are the antecedents of research capacity in nursing. The attributes of research capacity in nursing are 'non-individual level', 'context-embeddedness' and 'sustainability'. The direct outcome of research capacity in nursing is nursing research. The allied concepts identified are nursing research competency, nursing research capability and evidence-based practice capacity in nursing. Conclusions Research capacity in nursing is the ability to conduct nursing research activities in a sustainable manner in a specific context, and it is normally used at a non-individual level. Research capacity in nursing is critical for the development of the nursing discipline, and for positive nurse, patient and healthcare system outcomes. More studies are needed to further explore the allied concepts of research capacity in nursing, and to better understand relationships among these allied concepts. As healthcare transitions to the ambulatory setting, which includes infusion centers, it is imperative that it provides high-quality care that increases patient and provider satisfaction. An integrative literature review was conducted to identify the current state of outpatient acuity and opportunities for classifying patients in the infusion center. Eligibility criteria: Key words included outpatient acuity and nurse satisfaction with workload from peer-reviewed sources in the English language and nursing discipline. Associated MeSH terms were also included in the search. Sample: Articles from the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Ovid, CINAHL, and SCOPUS databases were used for this analysis. Results: Forty-five relevant abstracts and 13 were included in the analysis. Conclusion: There is no systematic way to assign nurse workload in the ambulatory setting. A review of the articles revealed themes of effective resource allocation, satisfaction, and classification and acuity tools, which supports the implementation or use of an acuity system to assign patient workload in the ambulatory setting. Implications: The lack of research evidence also supports the need for additional research. Leaders must take an active role in researching the evidence and developing evidence-based practice guidelines to ensure that safe and quality care is consistently rendered. Background: At present, no meta-analysis has been performed to quantitatively synthesize the attitudes, knowledge and skill levels of nursing students and nurses toward EBP. This makes it difficult to precisely identify the true level of EBP among nurses, implying that there is no evidence to support the adoption of EBP teaching strategies approaches. Design: A total of 9 Chinese and English databases including CNKI, Wan fang, VIP, CBM, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and CINAHL were used to search cross-sectional quantitative articles on EBP attitudes, knowledge and skills level of nurses and nursing students. The search time limit was from the inception of the database to September 2023. Methods: Two researchers independently screened the literature and extracted the data. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) was used to assess the quality of the included studies. Stata15.0 software was used for statistical analysis to summarize the scores of EBP attitude, knowledge and skills level of nursing students and nurses included in the study. Results: A total of 25 cross-sectional studies from 13 countries were included, involving 11363 nursing students and nurses. The meta-analysis results revealed that nursing students and nurses lacked evidence-based practical knowledge and skills, with pooled mean scores of 3.06 (95 % CI: 2.72, 3.39), 2.91 (95 % CI: 2.60, 3.22), 4.31 (95 % CI: 4.08, 4.54) and 4.45 (95 % CI: 4.20, 4.70). In contrast, nursing students and nurses revealed a positive attitude towards EBP, with pooled mean scores of 3.57 (95 % CI: 3.28, 3.86) and 5.11 (95 % CI: 4.80, 5.42). Subgroup analysis revealed that senior nursing students and nurses with master's degree or above had higher attitudes, knowledge and skills. Conclusions: In summary, nursing students and nurses have a positive attitude towards EBP. However, they seem to lack the necessary knowledge and skills. Therefore, nursing educators should consider this as an opportunity to strengthen the teaching of their evidence-based practical knowledge and skills. The verification of the relationship between critical thinking disposition and research competence could make contributions to promoting related knowledge building and providing practical implications for nurses, nurse educators and nurse managers. However, there is a lack of evidence exploring the relationship between critical thinking disposition and research competence in clinical nurses. Design A cross-sectional study. Methods A total of 156 clinical nurses from two tertiary hospitals participated in this study. The Chinese Version of Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory and Research Competence Scale for Clinical Nurses were used to measure critical thinking disposition and nursing research competence, respectively. Data were collected in September 2017. Descriptive statistics, bivariate correlation and linear regression were used to analyse data. The STROBE checklist was used in reporting this study. Results The clinical nurses surveyed showed a positive inclination to general critical thinking but reported an overall low level of nursing research competence. A moderate degree of positive correlation was found between critical thinking disposition and research competence among clinical nurses. Educational degree was also found as an influencing factor of nursing research competence of clinical nurses. Conclusion The critical thinking disposition of clinical nurses is positively related to their research competence. Relevance to clinical practice Nurses with a passion for nursing research should pay attention to improving their critical thinking dispositions. Nurse educators and managers should provide better learning, working and research environments and more supports to cultivate critical thinking disposition and improve nursing research competence in nursing research education and practice. Critically ill patients are highly susceptible to ocular complications due to impaired protective mechanisms, environmental exposure and treatment-related factors. Mapping research trends and identifying gaps is essential to strengthen evidence-based practice and improve patient outcomes.Aim To map research trends and identify knowledge gaps in eye care practices in the ICU within the nursing discipline to inform future research and clinical strategies.Study Design A bibliometric analysis was conducted using the Web of Science database from 1998 to August 2025. To be eligible for inclusion, articles must be published in English and indexed under nursing and addressing eye care in ICU. Data were analysed using the Bibliometrix R package and VOSviewer. The analysis included performance analysis, co-occurrence network analysis, thematic mapping and co-citation analysis to explore publication trends, research themes and collaboration patterns.Results A total of 38 articles were included in the final analysis. These papers were published in 16 journals, with an average annual growth rate of 8.48%. Leading journals were Nursing in Critical Care, Journal of Clinical Nursing and BMC Nursing. Thematic mapping demonstrated a predominant focus on motor themes-eye care, exposure keratopathy and mechanical ventilation. Meanwhile, basic and emerging themes were underrepresented, and international collaboration remained limited.Conclusions This study provides the first bibliometric mapping of ICU eye care research in nursing, identifying established domains in ocular complication prevention and the need for targeted research on guideline development and education.Relevance to Clinical Practice Incorporating standardised, evidence-based protocols, expanding nursing education and fostering interdisciplinary and international collaboration may improve the quality, consistency and outcomes of ocular health management in critically ill populations.
